A Different Direction Home

Adam left the flat-lit office behind and let the city take over the noise in his head.

The pavement was still dark from an earlier shower, reflecting buses, shop windows and the blurred movement of people heading somewhere definite. He walked without checking the time. For the first few minutes, the disputed renewal followed him anyway: the incomplete record, the careful wording, the possibility that someone would come back tomorrow expecting an answer he still could not give.

Then the details began to loosen their grip.

He passed through the busier streets and stopped outside a small, ordinary place serving hot food. Nothing about it looked like a decision worth making. That was partly why he went in.

Adam chose something filling but modest, paid, and found a seat near the window. The food was warm, salty and better than the meal he might have assembled at home while standing in the kitchen. He ate slowly, watching the evening traffic move past the glass. A group of friends squeezed around a nearby table, arguing cheerfully over whether they had missed their turn. Their ease made him feel briefly outside his own life, but not entirely shut out of it.

He checked his phone once. There was no new message and no change to the billing case. He put it face down.

The walk back did not solve anything. It did give the unresolved problem a proper size: one open ticket, waiting for someone with access to information he did not have. Not a verdict on him. Not something he could improve by worrying at it from a dark room.

By the time he reached the edge of the city centre, his feet were beginning to ache. He considered turning towards home, then kept walking for another few minutes, letting the choice remain open. For tonight, that was enough.
