A Small Exception

The tram rocked through the wet afternoon, its windows turning the city into blurred lights and dark shopfronts. Adam sat by the window with his phone balanced in one hand, his backpack between his shoes. He was tired enough that the supervisor’s message felt heavier than it should have.

When you get a minute, could you send over the review points tonight? It would help with the checklist.

Adam read it twice. The request was still outside his shift. He had already said he would share the points tomorrow. Part of him wanted to leave the message unanswered until morning, just to make the boundary mean something.

Then he opened a blank message and started typing.

He kept it short: what had been verified, what was still missing, and what the team needed to record before treating the renewal as settled. He added the specific billing checks—authorisation, the account history, and any migration issue—then stopped himself from turning it into the checklist he had declined to write after hours.

He read it once for tone. No apology. No promise to do more tonight. Just the useful part.

“Sent,” he murmured, more to himself than anyone else.

A minute later, the supervisor replied.

“Thanks, Adam. That’s enough to get it moving. We’ll pick it up tomorrow.”

Adam locked the phone and rested his head against the glass. He had given away a little of the evening, but not all of it. The distinction felt less clean than it had when he left work—and more practical, too.

At the next stop, someone’s umbrella dripped onto the tram floor. Adam watched the water gather and slide with the motion of the carriage. Tomorrow, the checklist would exist in some form. For tonight, he had done the small thing he could do without reopening the whole case.
